Mundus Patet The Mundus in Rome was a vaulted subterranean cavity. Romans regarded the Mundus as the way to the under world ruled by Dis Pater. Dii Inferi (Gods of the Underworld) and Manes (Spirits of the Dead) live in this world also. At the Mundus, people offered fruits and vegetables. The Mundus as closed except for three days a year. On August 24, October 5, and November 8, it was opened. Now the dead could move freely among the living. Communication between the two worlds were possible then. Romans consider these days to be dangerous to get married, fight or sail ships. On a side note, the Roman festival of Lemuria in May was the original celebration of Halloween. During Lemuria, the dead moved freely about and families had ceremonies to their ancestors. The Christian Church changed the date to Samhain because of Celtic influence.
